An honest look at what we're losing, why it matters, and what's still worth fighting for.
There's a quiet fact about British wetlands that stops you in your tracks once you hear it: we've lost more than 90% of them since the 1600s. Ninety percent. Drained for farmland, paved for development, polluted by run-off, and in more recent decades, quietly choked by climate change.
What's left isn't a footnote. The UK's remaining wetlands — fens, reedbeds, grazing marshes, peatlands, and estuaries — are among the most biologically productive habitats on Earth. They support two-thirds of our breeding wading birds, half of our dragonflies, and are the final wintering grounds for hundreds of thousands of waterfowl migrating from the Arctic each year.
Why wetlands punch above their weight
A hectare of healthy peat wetland can store more carbon than a hectare of tropical rainforest. That same hectare filters millions of litres of water a year, reduces downstream flooding, and hosts enough invertebrate life to feed dozens of bird species. They are, in ecological terms, cheat codes.
Wetlands are also rapidly disappearing worldwide. Since 1970, the global wetland area has shrunk by 35% — faster than any other ecosystem, including tropical forests. The UK reflects that global story.
What's actively harming them
Five pressures do the heavy lifting:
- Agricultural drainage. Two-thirds of UK wetland loss is historical drainage for farming — still ongoing in smaller pockets.
- Nutrient pollution. Nitrogen and phosphorus run-off from fields and sewage overflow chokes aquatic plants and triggers algal blooms.
- Peatland degradation. UK peatlands — once carbon vaults — are emitting more CO₂ than they absorb because they've been cut, drained, or burned.
- Sea-level rise. Coastal marshes have nowhere to retreat when bordered by sea walls and hard infrastructure.
- Invasive species. American mink, signal crayfish, and floating pennywort are out-competing native species.
What's working
The good news is that wetlands recover fast when given half a chance. Swans, ducks, and waders return within a season of habitat restoration. The Great Fen Project in Cambridgeshire, for example, has turned farmland back into fen and is already hosting bitterns, cranes, and short-eared owls — species that hadn't been seen there in a lifetime.
A few organisations doing serious work right now:
- Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) — runs ten wetland reserves and actively campaigns on water quality
- RSPB — manages over 150 nature reserves, many of them wetlands
- Wildlife Trusts — 46 local trusts restoring habitats at a county scale
- Moors for the Future — restoring degraded peat uplands across the Peak District and South Pennines
What we do
